What players ask before they download.

Is Alien Barrage like Space Invaders or Galaxian?

Closer to Galaxian and Galaga. There are no destructible shelters to hide behind — the thing most people remember about Space Invaders. Instead the aliens hold formation, then peel off and swoop down at you, so you're constantly moving rather than dug in behind a bunker. You touch and drag to steer; your ship fires on its own, so the whole job is positioning and dodging incoming fire.

What happens in a boss level?

Every seventh level is a boss level. A massive enemy fills the screen, soaks up far more damage than anything else in the game, and fires missiles you have to dodge while you keep shooting. Each time a boss comes back it's tougher than the last. At 3,000 points it's also the biggest single score swing available.

What is a bonus round?

Every fourth level breaks the pattern. Aliens fly choreographed formations across the screen without shooting or swooping, and you can't be hit — it's pure points, much like the challenging stages in Galaga. Clear every alien in one and you earn the Perfect Bonus Round achievement.

How do you get a high score?

Enemies are worth what they cost you: 100 for a small alien, 200 for a large one, 500 for a UFO, 3,000 for a boss. Later waves come faster and more crowded, so the longest runs score highest — survival is the scoring strategy. Game Center tracks top score and highest wave survived on separate leaderboards, with achievements for breaking into the top 10 and for every 50,000 points.

Which powerups can you collect?

Four, dropping from destroyed aliens at roughly a 15% chance and lasting 8 seconds each. Rapid Fire doubles your fire rate, Spread Shot fans three bullets at once, Shield absorbs a single hit, and Extra Life adds straight to your total. When a wave gets away from you, a bomb clears the screen outright.

How hard does it get?

Three difficulty modes set your margin for error: Easy gives 5 lives, Normal 3, Hard 2. Either way the levels keep escalating — there is no final stage. The run ends when you run out of lives.

Is Alien Barrage free?

Yes, free to download from the App Store. Optional in-app purchases add extra bombs, revives, and the Dual Cannon ship, which permanently fires two bullets at a time instead of one.
